ON THE TRAIL OF BERTANZA

A hike in the footsteps of Bertanza. The local council has been equipping this trail since 2018.
Set off from Piazzale delle Ginestre in Gardola, go along via della Fontana and then follow trail 266. Once you reach the square in Olzano, walk uphill along via San Lorenzo. Continue to the right and the uphill on trail 253, up to the crossroads with trail 259 towards Cima Gaès. To reach Cima Gaès, you must cross the Pidos bridge, and go past the Gianèch farmhouse and the Casina del Luné. From Cima Gaès, follow trail 251, which continues to the left up to Gaès. The same trail will then lead you back to Aer in around 2,5 kilometres. Follow via Panoramica to go back to the starting point.

1-ON THE TRAIL OF BERTANZA
Try and put yourselves in the shoes of the people walking these paths with painter Giovanni Andrea Bertanza. In 1618, the painter from Benaco was commissioned an ex-voto to celebrate the capture of bandit Giovanni Beatrice Zanzanù.
Imagine you are telling the painter about the hot day in which, one year before, the locals chased the bandit and executed him together with his accomplices. It was August 1617. Imagine you guide the painter though the places where the bloody battle took place and up to Mount Nota. From there, you will see the whole battlefield. The artist painted every scene, character, and place in detail, to make them immortal on the canvas.
In order to relive the heroic deeds of the warriors, information panels were installed from Piazzale delle Ginestre up to the places where the battle took place. The panels were realized by Professor Claudio Povolo, who studied these historical events through Bertanza’s pictorial testimony. Through his work, the painter handed down to us the stories of the legendary bandit Zanzanù.
